While Samsung still enjoys its throne as the biggest mobile vendor in the world, Chinese smartphone brands now dominate the market as they reached a total of 42% market share in Q2 2019 – the highest it has ever been according to Counterpoint.
The smartphone industry faced too many dramas, but these didn’t stop our mobile companies to launch their respective devices in the market. Now, Counterpoint Research revealed the status quo of the industry on its recent report.
According to Counterpoint, the overall global smartphone shipment has declined 1.2% (YoY) to 360 million units in Q2 2019, making it the 7th consecutive quarter of declining shipments. The research firm explained that the market slowdown is mainly because of China, which continues to fall for two years now.
Meanwhile, the report showed that Samsung still leads the market, as it was able to ship 76.6 million units in Q2 2019. As a result, it recorded 7.1% YoY growth. Also, despite facing controversies, Huawei is still the second biggest mobile vendor ahead of Apple.

Pathak also explained that Huawei is likely to be aggressive in China, and would register some growth there. However, it will not be enough to offset for the decline in its international shipments. As a result, this might lead to the decrease of the overall smartphone market in 2019.

Impressively, the company only took a year to achieve this milestone, and in fact, its achievement is one of the fastest ramp-ups ever recorded. With this, Realme reached 848% YoY increase in Q2 2019. Counterpoint, on the other hand, noted that its strong performance in India, and its expansion in other countries drove its growth.
Other smartphone brands included in the list are Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, Lenovo, LG, and HMD Global.

“The US-China trade war escalated with Huawei added in the entity list in May. Despite the band, Huawei was able to register a 4.6% growth during the quarter, capturing a 16% market share. The ban did not translate into falling shipments during this quarter, which will not be the case in the future,” Tarun Pathak, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research, addressed.
